Spirit Of The Age - Jazz Age Garden Party

The Concours d'Elegance recognises and celebrates the guests who best exemplify the Spirit of the Age, and is one of the highlights of the Garden Party. You don't have to enter the Concours, it's completely at your discretion; half of our guests do.

There are two competitions, one on Saturday 30th August and one on Sunday 31st August.

The trophies will be specially commisioned works of art.

The 'Coachwork & Couture' Concours d'Elegance

Organised by Spirit of the Age in association with Autogylm

After tea, a team of judges will be looking out for the best ensemble of car, dress and 'fixtures and fittings'. So add anything of interest such as a period map case, a picnic, or a travel rug. The overall aim is to best represent the glamorous Spirit of the Age. 
 

Judges

Giles Crickmay Esq. of Frank Dale and Stepsons, purveyors of Rolls-Royce and Bentley motorcars
Mme Celine Sykes, bespoke designer of reproduction period attire

Judging criteria

  • Car: style, condition, and presentation  (no need to polish all the private parts)
  • Dress: style, condition, and presentation  (ditto)
  • Overall ensemble: the harmony of the car and dress together, to best convey the Spirit of the Age

Classes

  • Class 1.  2  seater sports cars
  • Class 2.  4 seater tourers and sports tourers, up to 2.5 litres 
  • Class 3.  4 seat tourers and sports tourers, over 2.5 litres
  • Class 4.  Sedanca Coupes, 2 seat fixed heads, Broughams and Fixed Head Coupes
  • Class 5.  Saloons, Sports Saloons and Town Sedans
  • Class 6.  Grand Prix, Sports racers and Specials

2.  Guests' Choice

Guests will also choose their favourite entry. On arrival,  guests will be given a ballot slip, which they can use during the day.  The guests' favourite entry will be honoured on equal standing to the judges' choice.  It might even be that they choose the same car, so every vote is critical.

The display of the seven finalists in front of the house will then be followed by the selection of the four winners, three chosen by the judges, and one by guests.  Of these, one will be chosen as Best in Show.

The Derby Bentley Concours d'Elegance

Organised by the Silent Sports Car Club

Judging criteria

  • Car: style, condition, and presentation 
  • Dress: style, condition, and presentation 
  • Overall ensemble: the harmony of the car and dress together, to best convey the Spirit of the Age

Classes

  • Class 1.  Derby Bentley Saloons
  • Class 2.  Derby Bentley Fixed head Coupes
  • Class 3.  Derby Bentley Sedancas
  • Class 4.  Derby Bentley Drop Heads

2.  Guests' Choice Concours d'Elegance

Guests will also choose their favourite Derby Bentely entry. On arrival,  guests will be given a ballot slip, which they can use during the day.  The guests' favourite entry will be honoured on equal standing to the judges' choice. 

The display of the five finalists will be displayed in front of the house for the award ceremony.
